Versuri Francium-Vietnam – Southeast Asia Part III. lyrics
Southeast Asia,
Once ruled by kings and sultanates
Divided by
European Colonial powers
Southeast Asia,
Maybe divided forever
A new power came
Somewhere at their North
Japan took Indochina in five days
As France could offer little resistance
Their influence spread across the peninsula
And the balance of power shifted once more
On December seventh, Pearl Harbour was struck
While troops landed at Siam and Kota Bharu
Air raids fell upon Singapore and the Philippines
And war spread swiftly across the Pacific and Southeast Asia
Tomoyuki Yamashita, Tiger of Malaya
Commanded armies through deep jungles and roads
British defenses were steadily overcome
And Singapore fell after a brief campaign
Singapore, the Gibraltar of the East,
Just fell within eight days, ‘cause…
British thought they would come from the South
While Japanese troops actually came from the North
They landed on the Sarimbun Beach
Catching the defenders by surprise
Japanese troops landed upon Siam’s coast
As war spread across the region
Thai forces resisted in the opening hours
But a ceasefire soon followed the fighting
Japanese forces advanced into Burma
Driving north through forests and valleys
Allied troops withdrew toward India
As the colony fell under occupation
They also blocked the Burma Road
Cutting supplies from British Raj to China
The Dutch East Indies came under attack
As Japan sought oil and resources
Islands and ports were captured in succession
And colonial rule was swept aside
The Philippines, on the other hand, soon faced invasion
Following air raids across the islands
American and Filipino forces resisted
Before the archipelago fell under occupation
The American and Filipino forces fought quite well
Philippines fell in about 120 days
Still throughout the Philippines, resistance endured
Guerrilla forces fought across the islands
Sharing information and striking when able
While awaiting the return of Allied forces
Across Southeast Asia, change was enforced
New language and customs spread through the land
Children learned lessons under different rulers
As wartime policies touched everyday life
Allied forces pushed back across the seas
Determined to end the occupation
In 1945, Japan surrendered at last
Bringing an end to the years of war
European powers returned to reclaim their colonies
Though independence movements were already rising
Southeast Asia, land of many peoples
where kingdoms and empires once stood
through colonization, conflict, and change
its history was shaped across the centuries
Southeast Asia, diverse yet connected
from mountains and jungles to islands and seas
its nations now follow their own paths
while remembering the lessons of the past
