Versuri Francium-Vietnam – Southeast Asia Part II. lyrics
Southeast Asia,
Once ruled by mighty empires that rose and faded with time
Once ruled by local kings and sultanates
They fall into foreign rule
The Portuguese came to Malacca, 1511
Their ships arrived with cannon and trade
Seeking spices, wealth, and power
The Sultanate of Malacca was conquered
1512, Portugal reached the island of Timor
Claiming its eastern shores as a colony
Sandalwood and trade drew foreign interest
And Portuguese rule endured for centuries
The Spanish came to Philippines, 1565
Their ships navigate the archipeligo
They spread Christianity, and wants to seek spices
Challenging its main rival, the Portuguese!
The Dutch came along in 1602
Establishing the VOC and seeking spices
They took Malacca in 1641.
They didn’t spread Christianity, just wanted their spices
The British came along in 1685
Establishing Bencoolen on Sumatra’s shore
Later founding Penang as a trading port
Yet neither brought the influence they had hoped for
Until in 1819, the British cast their gaze
Upon a humble island in the heart of the strait
Few could have guessed in those early days
The great port it would one day become
Upon hearing this, the Dutch were angry
Claiming this island is part of their land
In 1824, they signed a treaty
Giving them Malacca and gave up Bencoolen
In 1826, the Straits Settlement is formed
Singapore, Malacca, Penang and Dinding
Linked together under British administration
Guarding the trade routes of the Malacca Strait
The British then moved beyond the coasts
Expanding inland through the Malay states
Their influence reached Northern Borneo as well
Bringing new rule to forests, rivers, and mines
The Malacca Strait is quite important
The Brits sent spices from India to China
They also carried opium into Chinese markets
Leaving millions trapped in the grip of addiction
Britain turned toward Burma’s inland realm
Drawn into conflict across the Irrawaddy
Three wars were fought as kingdoms fell one by one
Until Burma was fully absorbed into the empire
In 1858, the French arrived at last
Their influence spread across Vietnam’s lands
Later joining Cambodia and Laos in one colony
Forming French Indochina under colonial rule
Siam remained free and unclaimed
Between British and French ambitions
Its kings embraced reform and diplomacy
Preserving independence through changing times
In 1898, after the Spanish-American War
Spain left Philippines and Americans arrived
The Filipinos were frustrated and fought back with resistance
But they eventually got defeated and came under American rule
Southeast Asia became colonised
Divided among European powers
The fragmentation last for over three centuries
Until a new era brought a different kind of power to the region…
