Dwarf willow, bilberry, bogcotton; a land of lakes,
And to the north a flat transparent ocean
That stretches to the ice-cap. For those millions
Of frozen tons are always somewhere there,
Though out of sight now and far at the back of the mind
In the long hot day and the green efflorescence.

The insects pipe and drone. The arctic sky,
A very pale blue, completely bare of cloud,
Lays down its haunting midnight on the tundra.
There is no human trace for hours behind us,
And now we lie and sleep, or watch the new

Arctic world that rises like a mayfly
Out of each melting winter and never grows old,
But dies. Nothing here
Is in connexion with the central planet,
With the long histories and the human vision.

Its images are not ours. This speed and brightness
Are innocent of purpose. And in that huge returning
Winter that waits in the north there is no moral
– The ice bears no relation to the anger.
I lie and listen

To the desolating cry of an eagle.
Perhaps
This very newness and this isolation
May strike some hidden tremor in the heart
And make its rock gush water.

My companion
Sleeps, scarcely breathing, on the blue-green lichen.
And a faint unchanging radiance plays on us
Out of the whole young landscape, as I lie and watch for hours
The motionless lake and the grebe diving.
